For the eighth time in 2023, the Hungarian Wine Writers’ Circle has evaluated the wide range of dry and semi-dry white and red wines from Hungarian producers and compiled the “Super 12” list of the best white and red wines. The selection includes wines that were tasted by the members in 2023 and rated as high quality. The list of wines available for selection was continuously reduced to twelve white wines and twelve red wines in several rounds of voting
About the competition
The Hungarian Wine Grand Prix is a wine competition with a unique format: first, the wine experts vote for the wines of the last five vintages that, in their opinion, “meet the most demanding consumer expectations with their outstanding quality and prove to be competitive on an international level”, and then the wines with the most nominations are judged twice, in different order, by two committees. A total of 13 Hungarian wine regions are represented in the 2023 Super 12 lists: Eger and Szekszárd (4-4), Villány and Balatonfüred-Csopak (3-3) with the most wines. In terms of regions, Balaton wines won 7 out of 24 places, while the Pannonian wine region also won the same number of places. Among the wines, 17 were varietal wines and 7 were blends. Interestingly, Italian Riesling is gaining ground with consumers and the wine trade.
